“Mean Girls” (2024): A review

Recently I visited the cinema for the first time in almost 6 months to go and watch the new musical version of the 2000s movie, “Mean Girls”. Featuring Renée Rapp, Angourie Rice and Christopher Briney to name a few, the movie is a modern version of the 2000s hit teen comedy based on the musical written by Tina Fey. The movie focuses around how Cady Heron, played by Angourie Rice, has just moved to the USA from Kenya, Africa, and has to try and fit in with the societal challenges that this entails.

I found this movie was incredibly entertaining and really well made for what it was, a happy-go-lucky musical made to just bring joy to people’s day. As someone who was a fan of the original musical when it was in broadway in 2019, until it was shut down in early 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, I was excited to learn that the role of ‘Regina George’ was once again being played by Renee Rapp, and she did not disappoint. Rapp brought not only an incredible singing performance to Regina’s role, a given due to her history in musical theatre and her recently released music, but was able to capture Regina’s hypnotic nature and her ability to manipulate and control the school. Another great addition to the film was Avantika Vandanapu, who played the role of ‘Karen Shetty’. Vandanapu took the role of the traditional ‘dumb blonde’ and made it her own while still capturing the essence of Karen in her performance, and completely rocked her performance of “Sexy” in the movie.

One of the main things I enjoyed about this film was the fact that almost every main character was female. This is something we still don’t often see in films and I liked the contrast between other films out at the moment. It proved that women can in fact be just as powerful and manipulative as men can be, if not more. I massively enjoyed this film and it lived up to every expectation I had for the film adaptation.
